From appeasing a disgruntled dragon at Lewes Castle & Museum to tracking down Easter delights among 80,000 blooming daffodils, there’s a choice of trails at three beautiful historic sites in family.
These fun accessible trails will provide plenty of interest to people of all ages, providing a great day out in Sussex.
Dragon Egg hunt at Lewes Castle & Museum
Are you brave? Are you daring? Do you have experience finding hidden treasure? Then we need YOU to help us locate a Sussex dragon’s stolen eggs…
We are inviting all children to come to Lewes Castle & Museum during Easter weekend to find a Knucker’s missing eggs and help save Sussex from the dragon’s wrath!
| On the eve of the spring equinox, when all the people of Sussex were fast asleep, a silent thief swam deep, deep down into the swampy pond on the outskirts of Lyminster. After a few minutes, they returned to the surface carrying eight eggs. But these were no ordinary eggs. They were much larger than a chicken’s egg and covered in fantastic colours and glittering jewels. You see what many people do not know, is that the pond in Lyminster is home to a 30-foot dragon! The villagers say the beast is a 200 year old red, scaly female from the Knucker species of Dragon (or Draco troglodytes) and usually feeds on rabbits and causes no trouble. |  |
| However, ever since that fateful night, when the thief took the Knucker’s babies, she’s been storming into the towns, burning down houses, and eating children! And now she has kidnapped the Princess of Sussex and has her trapped in her lair! The King is offering a chocolatey reward for any brave researchers who can find the eggs and record their markings and location. A witness from the night, who was awoken by the Knucker’s cacophonous roar, saw the thief run into Lewes Castle with the eggs and run off toward the South Downs without them. The dragon trail is available from Wednesday 5th April throughout Easter, for an additional charge of £2 per trail. |  |
The site is open every day during the Easter holidays from 10am to 5pm.
Admission to the castle includes entry to the Museum of Sussex Archaeology, which features displays on the history of the county dating back thousands of years.
Those who chose to Gift Aid tickets will be able to revisit the site for free for a year.

On the hunt for Britain’s oldest rabbit at Fishbourne Roman Palace
| Hare round after rabbits this Easter at Fishbourne Roman Place, the largest Roman property in the UK and home to the country’s first ever rabbit nearly 2,000 years ago. The family-friendly Roamin’ Roman Rabbits trail will run at the heritage site near Chichester from Saturday 1st to Sunday 16th April. The trail is included in admission to the whole site. Those who return a completed trail will receive a special sweet surprise. |
| After finding the furry creatures around the grounds, visitors can marvel at the magnificent mosaics, discover how the Palace was literally saved from the bulldozers, before strolling round the beautiful, recreated Roman gardens, which are among the oldest found in Britain. |  |
| A range of other activities will be taking place at the site during Easter as part of Wild Things. This includes have-a-go archery, birds of prey displays and nature workshops. Ticket prices start at £13 for an adult, £6.50 for a child and £12 for senior concessions. Family tickets are £22 for one adult and up to three children, or £35 for two adults and up to four children.
There is free parking and food available to purchase on-site.
Easter delights at Michelham Priory
| Somewhere in the 80,000 daffodils are a range of Easter delights waiting for you to discover at Michelham Priory House & Gardens this Easter weekend. From spring flowers to Easter bonnets, there are a range of items hidden around the seven-acre site for visitors to track down. This fully accessible Easter Egg hunt in Sussex is suitable for all ages, including under 5s. The trail costs £2 per participant as a donation to the Friends of Michelham Priory, who have generously created the trail and donated the prizes. |  |
| In addition to the Easter trail, there will be an opportunity for a guided tour of the gardens with Michelham’s Head Gardener James Neal. Discover what it takes to care for 80,000 daffodil bulbs, which will be in full bloom across the site during the Easter weekend. There is also 800 years of history to explore, from the Priory’s medieval foundations through to the Tudors, Victorian era and World War Two. |  |
Michelham Priory House & Gardens is open from April 7th (Good Friday) to April 11th (Easter Monday) during the Easter holidays.
Opening times are 10.30am to 4.30pm with last admission 30 minutes before closing.
Admission is £13 for adults, £12 for seniors and children aged 5 to 17 cost £6.50. Under 5s go free.
Those who chose to Gift Aid their admission are entitled to 12 months free entry from the date of visit.
