Volunteer Testimonial – Philippa
“My first day of volunteering at Michelham Priory was in September 2023.
Choosing to volunteer at Michelham Priory appealed to me, from the choices of venue available, as it is local to me and I enjoy gardening. I had donated to the Adopt a Piece of History campaign, to support the upkeep of the Long Man of Wilmington, and the opportunity to become a volunteer was suggested by Sussex Past.
There are many positives I gain from my choice… I was wanting to have an opportunity to have a new focus. Although I work 4 days a week, Fridays are the start to my weekend and I felt I could give a few hours of my time to learn new things, making new acquaintances and being in a tranquil environment. The joy of knowing my efforts have a wider impact; seeing the pleasure the gardens bring to the community is rewarding. It gives me a feeling of wellbeing. I enjoy being out in the fresh air, getting a bit of exercise and learning more about the plants and the Priory. Also, being in the company of like-minded people is enjoyable.
I think volunteering gives a whole different dimension to life. Its a choice that can be so rewarding. If you are doing something you enjoy its never a burden, and opportunities to join in and banter or sometimes be solitary working through a task is a happy mix.
With a busy life you can wonder how can you possibly fit in more time to volunteer… well, strangely enough, I have found it to be both possible and beneficial and would encourage others to give it a go.”
