Excavations at Highdown, West Sussex: the fifth and sixth century burials
The fifth and sixth century burials within the enclosure on Highdown Hill, West Sussex are noted for their important assemblages of glassware and Quoit Brooch Style material. For the first time illustrated grave catalogues from the nineteenth and twentieth century excavations have been assembled and are now published. This talk will offer a brief overview of the site, its excavation history and contents, before a more in-depth presentation of an artefact, long on display in Worthing Museum, but only now made visible and its importance realised.
Sue Harrington is an independent researcher, focusing on the cemeteries of the Early Medieval period, with a specialism in burial textiles. Her work on the archaeology of southern Britain has a strong link to Sussex, and continues the long association between graduates of University College London Institute of Archaeology and The Sussex Archaeological Society.
