| Portia is a museum professional with over 10 years of experience in collections management, exhibition programming, project management and museum education. She has extensive experience in managing large- and small-scale projects, including the development of high-quality exhibitions and innovative engagement programmes, having secured numerous ACE and NLHF grants. She is currently the Curator of World Art at Brighton & Hove Museums, where she manages the Designated World Art collections, containing more than 16,000 objects from Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Americas, and including many different kinds of objects: masks, sculpture, textiles, domestic tools, agricultural tools, hunting and fishing implements, religious artefacts and more.
Born and raised in Brighton, Portia spent her childhood visiting museums and heritage sites across Sussex, developing a love for history and archaeology. Her passion for people and culture across the world stems from an early age and led her to complete a degree in Anthropology from the University of Sussex, graduating in 2011. Prior to her role at Brighton Museum, Portia worked at The Novium Museum in Chichester for 10 years, initially as Museum Assistant before becoming the Public Programme Engagement Officer, where she delivered the exhibitions programme, managed the extensive archaeology, social history and photography collections, developed and delivered the learning and engagement programme, and secured and managed large-scale funded projects. Portia has volunteered on the executive committee of Sussex Museums Group, a network of museums and heritage sites across Sussex, since 2015, and is currently Chair. |
