Meet Our Trustees – Adam Bates

Adam first came to Sussex in 1987 as a student and fondly recalls his first view of the Long Man which welcomed him on his arrival. He didn’t know Sussex but fell in love with the landscapes, the towns, the heritage and culture. He had his first visit to Michelham Priory while a student and years later with a family of his own, got to take his children to Lewes Castle and Fishbourne Roman Palace.

With a background in tourism and destinations he now runs a consultancy called Blue Sail, working for a wide variety of private and public clients across the UK, Ireland and occasionally farther afield on tourism, place and destination projects.

Before Blue Sail he worked for organisations including Disney and VisitBritain/VisitEngland in France, the USA and London and then found himself gravitating back to Sussex to live in Brighton and work for Brighton & Hove City Council.

In his spare time he can be found on the waters around Sussex and Kent, rowing for Shoreham Rowing Club and coaching the junior members of the club.

He loves the stories of Sussex, told through its heritage and feels very fortunate to be able to support The Sussex Archaeological Society as it develops and grows.
