Step into the world of medieval knights and towering castles during the Battle of Lewes weekend, 9 & 10 May – Kids go free!
Step back into the dramatic history of the medieval town during Battle of Lewes weekend at Lewes Castle. This special weekend marks the anniversary of the famous Battle of Lewes, when forces led by Simon de Montfort defeated King Henry III in a pivotal moment in English history.
Follow the Knight’s Shield Trail
Take on the challenge of our brand-new family trail, inspired by the legendary Battle of Lewes in May 1264. Search the castle grounds for the shields of knights who once fought in the lands surrounding the town of Lewes. Will you find them all?
See history come to life
In the Gun Garden, visitors can also discover a medieval craft display showcasing traditional wool and decorative arts. Watch skilled makers demonstrate techniques such as embroidery, nålbinding and hand sewing, alongside painted and decorated items including woodwork and shields. Using historically authentic materials and methods, the display explores how these crafts were used in everyday medieval life. Visitors are encouraged to get hands-on – touch the materials, smell the fibres and speak with the makers to learn more about these historic skills.
Kids go free
To celebrate the occasion, children go free when accompanied by a paying adult, making it a great opportunity for a family day out. If pre-booking, just book tickets for adults and children will be admitted for free on the day of your visit.
