Established in 1846, The Sussex Archaeological Society, the UK’s oldest group of its kind, is dedicated to preserving Sussex heritage.

As a registered charity, we open historic houses and gardens to the public, curate six accredited museums, and promote research through our extensive libraries, archives, and research grants.

With no government funding, we rely on income from admissions, donations, grants, and memberships to care for 10 Listed buildings, six Scheduled Monuments, and a Registered park and garden. Your support can help preserve our local heritage—join us as a Member, make a Donation, Volunteer, or Visit our sites.

We also offer a finds identification service and host various walks, talks, and conferences on Sussex’s archaeology and history. Our archaeological collections cover East and West Sussex, including the award-winning Collections Discovery Centre at Fishbourne Roman Palace in partnership with The Novium.

The Sussex Archaeological Society is a registered company limited by guarantee (Reg. No. 202795), a registered charity (Reg. Charity No. 207037), and VAT-registered (VAT Reg. No. 692 8015 18). Sussex Past Trading Limited is our subsidiary (Company No. 3355746), and our Registered Office is at Barbican House, 169 High Street, Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 1YE.
