Box Hedging at Fishbourne Roman Palace survives and thrives following generous grant
At Fishbourne Roman Palace we have been celebrating the restoration of the box hedging to its full glory after being attacked by an infestation of box moth caterpillars.
Pest control specialists, Eradipest, who completed the work commented: “We were contacted by Fishbourne Roman Palace & Gardens earlier this year to see if their historic box hedges could be saved after being decimated by caterpillars. The Fishbourne team thought they were dead, but after getting in touch with the European Boxwood and Topiary Society who arranged a generous donation, it was full steam ahead for the Eradipest hit squad!”
Dr Rob Symmons, Curator at Fishbourne Roman Palace, added: “The Palace is home to the oldest formal garden in Britain and we think the only example worldwide of a garden planted into holes originally dug by the Roman nearly 2000 years ago. So, you can imagine our concern when a box moth threatened to destroy this nationally important asset. But, thanks to Eradipest and the generosity of the European Boxwood and Topiary Society the hedges have survived and we can continue to share the story of this amazing place into the future”.
We’d like to thank the generous donor, the European Boxwood and Topiary Society and Eradipest for making this possible.
