Dr Matthew Pope is a prehistorian working for the UCL Institute of Archaeology as an Associate Professor. He teaches and leads on research into our early human ancestors, focusing on reconstructing the lives and environments of Neanderthal people.

Since 2008 he has helped to build a specialist palaeolithic and geoarchaeological practice within Archaeology South-East, the Institute’s contract archaeology unit. His research focuses on the Ice Age archaeology of southern Britain and the Channels Islands, and this has included excavations at the Sussex prehistoric sites of Boxgrove, the Valdoe, Beedings and Piltdown.

He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. He is committed to helping to foster an inclusive and sustainable heritage sector that meets the challenges of today’s world.

Matt first attended a Sussex Archaeological Society conference in 1986, aged 14, and joined the Society shortly after, becoming a Trustee in 2018.
