Laurence has been a trustee of Sussex Past for the last 3 years. As well as sitting on the Board he is also a member of the Finance & General Purposes Committee and the Marketing Sub-group. His particular specialism is in marketing with more than 30 years’ experience at a senior level, but he has also provided input into the Society’s long-term strategy, events, finances, new website and IT infrastructure as well as recommendations around product development.

Laurence is a former marketing director for VisitBritain, the national agency for inbound tourism, and was also GM of VisitEngland, the domestic equivalent. In these roles he was responsible for the promotion of the country’s thousands of local attractions, strategic co-ordination of the 550-strong Tourist Information Centre network and the quality ratings for accommodation and attractions.

He was also instrumental in creating the iconic ‘GREAT Britain’ campaign which initially showcased the UK to overseas visitors through the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, a Royal Wedding and the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games. The campaign still runs across all international government departments to this day.

Since that time, his marketing career has spanned different sectors in the commercial sector for the likes of STA Travel, Estée Lauder Companies and IDP Connect. Having recently retired from full-time work, Laurence plans to work as a part-time marketing consultant and take on new voluntary roles.
