Volunteer to protect historic and treasured locations across the South Downs
Members of the Sussex Archaeological Society are invited to take part in an exciting project led by Historic England, the South Downs National Park Authority and the National Trust, on monitoring changes to historic and treasured locations across the South Downs.
Scheduled Monuments are nationally-significant archaeological sites. They range from prehistoric earthworks to Second World War defences. There are 575 Scheduled Monuments in the South Downs, and their continued conservation is reliant on monitoring and recording – assessing changes to sites, both positive and negative, from outside influences. These influences might include impacts from grazing, scrub encroachment, cultivation and other land uses.
Participants are wanted for framework development and monitoring training days on:
– Thursday 2nd February – Iping & Stedham Common Reserve
– Friday 3rd February – Cissbury Ring Hillfort
Richard James of Archaeology South-East will be holding two half-day training sessions to test the survey method. Participation will help us to assess the emerging framework and toolkit ‘on the ground’ and capture feedback on work so far.
