Celebrating and sharing the heritage of Sussex since 1846

This year marks a remarkable milestone for The Sussex Archaeological Society as we celebrate our 180th anniversary.

Founded on 18 June 1846 in Lewes, the Society was born from a growing enthusiasm for Sussex’s history and archaeology. The discovery of the remains of William de Warenne and Gundrada, founders of Lewes Priory, sparked widespread local interest and inspired a group of passionate antiquarians to establish what would become The Sussex Archaeological Society. Their vision was simple but ambitious: to promote the study of Sussex’s history and archaeology and to preserve its heritage for future generations.

While many similar societies founded during the Victorian period have long since disappeared, The Sussex Archaeological Society has continued its work of preserving and sharing Sussex’s heritage. Through the dedication of generations of Members, volunteers, staff and supporters, the Society has grown into a respected heritage organisation, caring for important historic buildings, archaeological sites, collections and landscapes across Sussex.

Today, the Society manages and protects a diverse portfolio of heritage sites, including Anne of Cleves House, Fishbourne Roman Palace, Marlipins Museum, the Priest House and Lewes Castle, alongside a wider estate that includes the iconic Long Man of Wilmington.

As we reflect on 180 years of achievement, we also celebrate the people who have made it possible. From the earliest members who established the Society in 1846 to the volunteers, trustees, staff and supporters of today, their commitment has ensured that Sussex’s rich heritage can be explored, enjoyed and protected for generations to come.

As we celebrate this milestone, we extend our sincere thanks to all our Members for their continued loyalty and support. Your commitment helps us preserve and share Sussex’s heritage for future generations.
