Grown in Lewes: Artist Gardeners

A talk by Sarah Bayliss, hosted by The Friends of Anne of Cleves’ House.

Join us for an inspiring talk by Sarah Bayliss, co-editor (with Ruth Thomson) of the beautifully illustrated new book Grown in Lewes, which celebrates the town’s rich relationship with gardens, growing, markets, and green community life. As Sarah writes: Lewes is full of gardeners and full of artists too – but what happens when both activities come together as a twin passion?

Spanning past, present, and future, Grown in Lewes brings together stories from over 50 local contributors. It explores everything from the town’s historic allotments and gardening societies to the evolution of its markets and the origins of well-loved businesses like Elphick and Bill’s. The book also shines a light on today’s pioneering community projects – from pollinator corridors and churchyard rewilding to orchards, community gardens, and more.

Illustrated with photographs, paintings, maps, and memorabilia, this 192-page volume is both a record and a celebration of a community deeply rooted in both cultivation and creativity.

Come along to hear the stories behind the book and discover how gardening in Lewes has always been about more than just growing plants – it’s about growing community.
