Tuesday 25th February

Join us for the final instalment of our Spring Talk series, where we explore changing interpretations of the Long Man of Wilmington – one of Britain’s most iconic chalk figures.

This talk will outline evolving ideas about the figure’s date, its social context, and even propose new hypotheses about its possible creator. Insights from excavations on and around the site, combined with evidence from a variety of sources, will shed light on the figure’s origins and the transformation of the surrounding landscape over time.

About the speakers

Martin Bell is Emeritus Professor of Archaeological Science at Reading University and a former President of the Sussex Archaeological Society. His most recent book is Making One’s Way in the World: The Footprints and Trackways of Prehistoric People (Oxbow)

Chris Butler runs an archaeological company Chris Butler Archaeological Services Ltd based at Selmeston. He has led many excavations in East Sussex and is the author of books including Prehistoric Flints and East Sussex Under Attack: Anti-Invasion Sites 1500-1990.
