Prestige, Piety, and Peasants: Understanding the ‘Common’ Experience of Lewes Castle within the Sussex Landscape

This talk with Arthur Redmonds will explore the growing focus within castle studies and medieval archaeology on contextualising castles within their wider social and cultural landscapes.

In particular, the talk will delve into how castles impacted the everyday lives of the communities around them, an area still ripe for exploration. Focusing on Sussex Past property, the Norman Lewes Castle, the talk will investigate its influence on the surrounding town and Sussex countryside, framed through Tim Ingold’s concept of the ‘Taskscape.’ The Taskscape approach highlights the rhythms and activities present across a landscape, and the discussion will examine these themes through the materials, architecture, and daily routines in Lewes between 1050 and 1550.

Ultimately, the talk will show how the castle’s materiality, sensory experiences, and related case studies reflect the castle’s role in ongoing social negotiation, as it sought to assert order within a Sussex landscape undergoing constant change.

Arthur has entered his final year of a South, West & Wales Doctoral Training Partnership-funded PhD on Castle Taskscapes at the Universities of Exeter and Cardiff.
