Society receives backing from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF):
Sussex Archaeological Society has received vital support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund following a successful application to their Covid Emergency Fund. The SAS has been awarded the maximum £250,000 grant to help cover immediate costs and urgent conservation works required at our properties.
Amanda Jones, Chair of Trustees for the Sussex Archaeological Society said: “We are enormously grateful to National Lottery Heritage Fund for this much needed support which brings immediate financial security over these next few months. The award of the maximum amount available is a real validation of the importance of our much-loved Society at national level. We are committed to ensuring the Society, its wonderful archaeological and heritage collections and the amazing properties in its care will survive to play a central role in our region’s social and economic recovery. The impacts of this crisis remain far reaching and so we are pleased to have the opportunity to apply for further support through the government’s £1.57bn cultural recovery fund.
Our sincere thanks also go to our loyal members and visitors who are continuing to support us throughout these difficult times and to those who have donated so generously to our ongoing 175 campaign; the love shown for our amazing Society has been overwhelming.”
MP, Nus Ghani visits Michelham Priory:
Following hot on the heels of Nigel Huddleston’s (DCMS) recent visit to Fishbourne, we were delighted to welcome Wealden MP Nus Ghani to Michelham Priory. Nus was interested to see how Michelham and the wider Society were doing as Covid restrictions start to ease. Her visit particularly focussed on the issues with water levels in the moat and the ongoing difficulties with the Environment Agency and other key organisations in securing a regular water supply. Nus and her team, supported by Nigel Huddleston, will be raising the issue in Westminster in a bid to try and help and draw attention to the issues. Their support is extremely welcome after many years of discussions with the EA but little progress. The moat is such a vital historical feature of the site and the Society is committed to finding a solution to the problem and preserving the moat for many years to come.
