Fallen Flint from Lewes Castle’s Norman Arch

Due to the recent extreme weather conditions small pieces of flint have fallen from the 12th Century Norman Arch at Lewes Castle. Castle Gate road has been closed and the Sussex Archaeological Society is taking all necessary precautions and working with East Sussex Fire & Rescue, Highways and Lewes District and Eastbourne Borough Council’s Building Controls and Conservation Departments to ensure public safety.

Debbie Matthews, the Society’s Communication Officer advised the press that “The parts of the castle owned and cared for by The Sussex Archaeological Society are annually inspected by a third party expert and regularly by the Society’s professional staff team  to ensure the safety of our visitors, staff and members of the public.”

The road will remain closed until further notice.
