A talk about the site of Tidemills, by Luke Barber, Sussex Archaeological Soicety’s Research Officer, who has led the excavations there.
Tidemills lies at Bishopstone, between Newhaven and The Buckle, Seaford, East Sussex. It is one of the last areas of accesible, undeveloped coast in the county.
The mill was established in the 1760s and continued in use until the later 19th century. The associated village, established to house the workers and their families remained in use after its closure and was used for a variety of purposes including the housing of railway and harbour workers. Its civilian population was eventually moved out at the beginning of the Second World War.
Cost: £8 per person.
