Join us for a day of enjoyment and exploration focusing on the most famous aspect of the site – the stunning mosaic floors. This special Mosaic Mayhem! event gives visitors of all ages a chance to find out more about mosaics, how they are designed and made, and to try some mosaic making for themselves.
The mosaics at Fishbourne Roman Palace are some of the best early mosaics in Britain – and today they can be seen in the place where they were laid nearly 2,000 years ago. This event offers a fantastic opportunity to explore how and why these mosaics were laid, and to discover what it might have been like to make and walk on these floors.
During the day there will be a chance to join dedicated guided tours and to handle original tiles or tesserae from the Roman mosaics found at the Palace. There will also be an opportunity to see demonstrations of mosaic making by our in-house artist and to find out more about modern mosaic making. Visitors will be able to find out more about different mosaic designs, and there will be opportunities to make your own mosaic using a range of different materials.
Younger visitors can enjoy making an edible mosaic using sweet treats in our special workshop and there will also be a chance to dress in Roman costume and find out how a mosaic floor would feel underfoot! We will also be inviting everyone to add a piece to our giant mosaic design which will grow throughout the day.
