Have you ever wanted to try your hand at archaeological excavation? Or have you ever wondered how archaeologists can recreate the past from just a few tiny pieces of pottery and bone? If the answer is “Yes” then make sure you visit Fishbourne Roman Palace this summer.
From the Tuesday 24th July until Friday 3rd August, as part of the national Festival of Archaeology the Palace will be excavating a trench and giving budding archaeologists of all ages a chance to Have a Go At Archaeology. In previous excavations visitors have found Roman pottery, coins and even pieces of mosaic. Who knows what you might find this year! Experts will be on hand to help you identify your finds and explain what they can teach us about the past. They will also be able to show you the basics of excavation, so no previous archaeological experience is necessary. We’ll even provide you with all the tools you need.
Digging will take place from 11am to 4pm and all visitors to Fishbourne Roman Palace are welcome to join in as it is included in the admission charge. No experience is necessary and tools will be provided. You’ll be amazed how addictive it is!
