Re-enactment group Britannia depict the sorts of people found in the fighting arena such as soldiers who found themselves on the wrong side of mutinies, criminals or slaves, born to fight. They will be on hand to talk about their equipment and fighting tactics and there will be displays of gladiatorial contests in the formal Roman garden. There will also be lots of ‘hands-on’ activities for the whole family, including finding out about Roman food, costume, medicine and games. Plus there is an opportunity to get a fake wound and to try your hand at netting wild beasts in the Gladiator School!
Visitors to the event can also discover objects from 2,000 years ago, take a guided tour and get a different perspective on the biggest collection of early mosaic floors north of Rome.
