Barcombe Roman Villa - Archaeological Training in July!!
This summer there will again be training excavations at the Barcombe Roman bath house site, near Lewes, East Sussex. This year there will be five 5-day Excavation Training courses, beginning each Monday from 5th July. |

Archaeological Training. This summer the Centre for Community Engagement (CCE) at the University of Sussex will again be organising a programme of research and training excavations at the Barcombe Roman bath house site, near Lewes, East Sussex. This year there will be five 5-day Excavation Training courses, beginning each Monday from 5th July. The courses will cover: excavation techniques, context records, recording plans and sections, photography, environmental archaeology, finds processing, on-site surveying techniques and geophysical prospecting methods. All those who successfully complete a course will be awarded 18 credits at university undergraduate level 1. The courses are suitable for beginners or those with some experience, including those considering reading archaeology at university (minimum age 16), amateur archaeologists, undergraduates, and those undertaking university extra-mural courses in archaeology. Tutors: David Rudling, Chris Butler, Luke Barber, Lisa Fisher and Jane Russell. Tuition fees: £220 per course, or £155 concessionary rate. There will also be a weekend version of the excavation training course, ie An Introduction to Field Archaeology, tutor: Chris Butler. This course comprises 4 Saturday dayschools on alternate Saturdays beginning 12th June. 12 credits. Fees: £180 (£125 concessions). There will also be a number of 2-day weekend specialist courses: Geo-archaeology 10-11 July (tutor: Michael Allen); Planning and Section Drawing 31 July-1 August (Jane Russell); Site Photography for Archaeologists 7-8 August (Lisa Fisher) - all courses are worth 6 credits each. Fees: £85 (£60 concessions). There is also a Saturday dayschool on 17th July on An Introduction to On-site Conservation (Adrian Tribe). £50 (£25 concessions). The project will also provide weekday Volunteering opportunities during the period 5th July to 6th August (Cost: £50 per 5 day week).
