John Manley will be teaching this course for four Saturdays, starting 11th October 2008, at the University of Sussex. My aim is to illustrate how knowledge of other cultures around the world, and particularly their relationships with their surroundings and material culture (aka ‘stuff’), can illuminate the ‘stuff’ that archaeologists dig up. This exciting conference, organised jointly with the University of Nottingham and supported by the AHRC, will bring together researchers from a variety of disciplines, in particular Archaeology, History, Geography, English and Performing Arts, to consider landscape and identity from different temporal and cultural perspectives, and highlight new approaches to understanding past and present landscapes.
